The Importance of Sleep

“Getting enough sleep is essential for helping a person maintain optimal health and well-being. When it comes to their health, sleep is as vital as regular exercise and eating a balanced diet.”
– Medical News Daily

As you can read by the title and the quote above, the topic today is “The Importance of Sleep”. I am a strong believer of sleep and the many benefits that follows with having a good sleeping routine.

Sleep plays an important role throughout all your life and helps to protect your mental health, physical health and quality of life. When you sleep your body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health. When you don’t get enough sleep aka sleep deficiency, it affects how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others. Sleep deficiency also has been linked to depression, suicide, and risk-taking behavior.

Some of the benefits of a good night’s sleep:
1. Better productivity and concentration
2. Lower weight gain risk
3. Lower risk of heart disease
4. Better performance and more energy
5. Stronger immune system
6. Emotional well-being

When I don’t get enough sleep or sleep bad, it affects my mood and productivity a lot. So I go to great lengths to get a good night’s sleep. I have made sure that my bedroom is only associated with “relaxation and rest”. Before going to sleep I turn on my galaxy projector, light a candle, turn my alarm on and put my phone away. I always read before going to sleep – reading makes my mind wind down and makes me ready to sleep.

Recently I have “invested” in a good pillow, and it is the best decision I have made sleep-wise. It is an ergonomic pillow with memory foam that forms after your neck and head. It gives great support and it also got cooling gel which provides a balanced temperature while you sleep.

Another thing I use is a sleep mask. I have used the sleep mask from Daydream for years now, it blocks out all light and sits comfortably on your nose and around your head. I just got a new one, which brings me to my third sleep mask from this brand – so it’s safe to say that I love these masks.

I understand that it is not easy for everyone to get a proper sleeping routine for all kinds of reasons, but it is vital and I believe it is something that sadly is not discussed enough.

Thanks for this post! I’m a firm believer in getting a good nights sleep. I may have to invest in a sleep mask after reading this!
